NYSC member trains 70 youths, women on skills acquisition in Adamawa
Mss Sulfat Aliu, a corps member serving in Yola-North Local Government, Adamawa, has trained no fewer than 70 less-privileged youths and women on different trades to enable them to be self-reliant.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aliu hails from Kwara and studied Accounting at the Lagos State Polytechnic.
Speaking on Tuesday at the end of the four-week training, Aliu said the training was part of her Community Development Service (CDS) project – one of the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC – in which corps members contribute to their host communities.
She said women and youths have the highest percentage of unemployment rate with the government emphasizing more on citizens becoming self-reliant.
“To tackle this need and contribute to the development of the community, I chose skills acquisition as my CDS project to train 70 individuals on various skills acquisition.
“The skills include tailoring, cosmetology, leatherwork and livestock,” she said.
Speaking, the state Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, commended the corps member for the project and demanded the data capture of all the beneficiaries for government support.
Fintiri was represented by Hajia Aisha Bello, Head, Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation Agency in Adamawa.
He assured of the government’s support to individuals and groups with such projects aimed at reducing poverty and creating employment opportunities for youths and women.
In his remarks, Malam Ibrahim Tukur, Adamawa state NYSC Coordinator, called on other corps members to emulate Miss Aliu and leave a legacy in their respective host communities.
Tukur, represented by Mr Sumla Elisha, Head of CDS, said that NYSC has the mandate to empower youths for national development.
He encouraged members of the public to support corps members who engage in projects that would impact positively people’s lives.
Mrs Gloria Musa, on behalf of the beneficiaries, commended Aliu for training them and promised to practice it as well as train others.
She said the training had increased their confidence for a better life. (NAN)
