Police arrest 5 suspects for fraud, others in Yobe
The Yobe State Police Comma has arrested a five-member syndicate for specialising in defrauding several victims in Adamawa and Gombe states.
The Command’s Spokesman, SP Abdulkarim Dungus, on Wednesday in Damaturu, stated, “The suspects were apprehended by the coordinated joint operations of the State Intelligence Department (SID) and Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters.
He said this led to the suspects to confess to defrauding Malam Audu Shehu of N500,000 in Shekau village in Tarmuwa Local Council of Yobe state.
However, the stolen money was recovered from one of the suspects while searching their personal belongings. On the syndicate’s operations, Dungus said, “Their mode of operandi involves the pretence of being travellers seeking for assistance.
They subsequently deceive their victims by parting away with large sums of money under the guise of performing fetish work to ward off enemies that will bring economic prosperity.”
While confessing to the frauds, the spokesmanstated that, “It was their first operation in Yobe state, but we’re active in Adamawa, Gombe, and Taraba states for over three years.”
The police commissioner, Garba Ahmed, therefore urged the public to be cautious of impostors posing as marabouts or security agents to defraud members of communities. “You should report suspicious activities to the nearest police station and continue to remain vigilant,” he said.
