Police Foil Smuggling Attempt, Seizes Cannabis and Dynamite in Niger
Niger’s National Police seized over 114 kg of cannabis and 4,000 dynamite sticks in a garage in Arlit yesterday, October 13, 2024. The cannabis, weighing 114.18 kg, was hidden in 244 balls inside paint boxes, while the dynamite sticks were concealed in 10 sacks. These illegal products were smuggled from neighboring Nigeria through merchandise transport trucks.
Thanks to the diligence of the Office Central de Répression du Trafic Illicite des Stupéfiants (OCRTIS), led by Director M. Tassiou Ibrahim, the police were able to track down the perpetrators after several days of investigation. Four Nigerien individuals were arrested, including two for high-risk international drug trafficking.
Unfortunately, drug seizures have become increasingly common in northern Niger lately. Just recently, 36 kg of cannabis were seized by the OCRTIS departmental branch in Abalak.
