Police Recover Eight Unexploded Devices in Maiduguri
The Borno State Police Command has recovered eight unexploded devices in Maiduguri following distress calls from residents in the Dala and Gwange areas.
According to a statement by ASP Grace Michael, the command’s spokesperson, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) team swiftly responded to reports of suspicious objects near an uncompleted building in the Dala-Abuja Talakawa area on Friday.
“The team recovered six projectiles and one unexploded mortar bomb, which were safely relocated to a secure site,” the statement read.
Later that day, at around 1 p.m., another suspicious object was reported along the riverbank in the Gwange area. The EOD-CBRN team was deployed and safely recovered an unexploded hand grenade.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the ordnance had likely been displaced and washed ashore by recent floods in the state, Michael added.
In response to the incident, the police conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Awareness (EORE) training for residents in both affected communities, educating them on safety measures.
The Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal, reassured the public of the command’s dedication to maintaining safety and urged residents to remain calm and vigilant.
“Report any suspicious objects or activities immediately through our emergency lines: 0806 807 5581 and 0802 347 3293,” the statement concluded.
The swift response by the EOD-CBRN team underscores ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of residents amid challenges posed by remnants of conflict and natural disasters.
