Rwandan President Paul Kagame has officially declared his intention to run for a fourth term in the upcoming elections scheduled for next year.
In an interview with Jeune Afrique, a French-language news magazine, President Kagame stated, “Yes, I am indeed a candidate.”
The 65-year-old leader, known for his strong-handed rule over the nation for decades, expressed gratitude for the trust Rwandans have placed in him, declaring, “I will always serve them, as long as I can.”

Earlier this year, the Rwandan government decided to synchronize the parliamentary and presidential election dates, setting them for August next year.
President Kagame’s decision to seek a fourth term follows controversial constitutional amendments that enabled him to serve a third term.
A former rebel leader, Kagame has effectively led the country since the end of the 1994 genocide.
In the last election in 2017, he secured a third-term victory with nearly 99 per cent of the votes.
