Sokoto State Government Boosts Security with New Military Base and Infrastructure
The Sokoto State Government has announced the construction of a military base in Illela town. This effort aims to support military operations in the region and address the growing security concerns in the northwest and the country at large.
Dr. Bashir Achida, Economic Adviser to the state governor, revealed that the base will be handed over to the federal government upon completion, aligning with constitutional provisions. Achida emphasized the importance of securing citizens’ lives and properties, particularly given Sokoto’s strategic position in agriculture and national economic development.
The military base is currently under construction in Illela town to support military operations in the region. This base will be handed over to the federal government upon completion.
It is expected to enhance mobility and responsiveness, the state government has provided 140 operational vehicles to support security agencies. Additionally, major roads are being constructed to facilitate military access to rural communities, ensuring swift intervention in case of security breaches.
Community guards, established earlier by the state government, have been equipped with 700 motorcycles and 40 Hilux vehicles. This empowerment enables them to complement the efforts of the military and other security agencies in combating banditry and criminal activities.
Achida highlighted the state’s vulnerability due to its international border and agricultural significance, making it a prime target for bandits and anti-social elements ¹ ² ³. With a secured environment, Sokoto aims to contribute more to the nation’s efforts to combat poverty and food shortages.
