Sudan Condemns U.S. Sanctions on Gen. Abdel al-Burhan

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly criticized the U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions on Gen. Abdel al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces.
In a statement issued through its Office of the Spokesperson and Media Directorate and shared by the Sudanese Embassy in Nigeria, the ministry denounced the sanctions as unjust and baseless.
“The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejects and condemns the sanctions imposed on Gen. al-Burhan. This decision lacks justice and objectivity and is based on unfounded claims disconnected from reality,” the statement read.
The ministry emphasized that Gen. al-Burhan is a unifying figure for the Sudanese people, symbolizing their sovereignty and leading efforts to combat the Janjaweed terrorist groups.
“It is perplexing that such a decision comes shortly after the U.S. administration acknowledged that the Rapid Support Militia committed genocide in Sudan. Imposing sanctions on the leader defending Sudan against these atrocities reflects a confused and flawed sense of justice,” the ministry added.
The statement further alleged that the U.S. sanctions undermine neutrality by effectively supporting perpetrators of genocide.
“This decision will not shake the resolve of the Sudanese people in their fight against terrorist militias nor weaken their unity and determination to restore peace and stability to Sudan,” the ministry concluded.
