Sudanese Leader Reshuffles Government Amid Ongoing Conflict
Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has implemented a partial government reshuffle as the country faces an escalating conflict.
In an official statement, the council confirmed the dismissal of Hussein Awad as foreign affairs minister, appointing Ali Yousif Ahmed as his successor. Additionally, Graham Abdel-Qadir was removed as minister of culture and information, with Khalid Ali Aleisir stepping into the role.
Al-Burhan, who also serves as the commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), replaced Osama Hassan, minister of religious affairs and endowments, with Omer Bakhit Mohamed Adam. The previously unfilled position of minister of trade and supply was assigned to Omer Ahmed Mohamed Ali.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been mired in conflict between the SAF and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, resulting in severe humanitarian crises. An Oct. 14 report by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) estimated that over 24,850 lives have been lost in the violence. Furthermore, as of Oct. 29, the International Organization for Migration reported that more than 14 million people have been displaced within and outside the country.
