Swiss Government Donates €1.2 Million to Support Borno Flood Victims
The Swiss Government has contributed €1.2 million to the Borno State Flood Disaster Relief Fund to assist victims affected by the recent flood disaster in the state.
The donation was announced by Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Nicolas Lang, during a sympathy visit to the Borno State Government House in Maiduguri. Ambassador Lang was joined by Mr. Nicolas Martin-Achard, Senior Humanitarian Advisor, and Mr. Florent Geel, Senior Political Advisor from the Swiss Embassy.
Ambassador Lang highlighted Switzerland’s previous support to Borno, including a contribution of $700,000 in 2023 to the Borno Model, a program aimed at aiding the mass exit of Boko Haram insurgents and civilians caught in the conflict.
“This donation underscores Switzerland’s ongoing solidarity with the government and people of Borno who have been severely affected by the crisis,” Lang stated.
In response, Governor Babagana Zulum expressed his gratitude, saying, “On behalf of the Government and the people of Borno, I extend our sincere thanks to the Swiss Government for this generous contribution, which will be used responsibly to support the flood victims.”
The flood disaster in Borno has displaced over one million people, with thousands of homes submerged after a dam burst following heavy rains in northeastern Nigeria. Maiduguri, the state capital, has been at the forefront of relief efforts.
