Terror Strikes Kebbi: Lakurawa Militants Kill 15, Burn 7 Villages
At least 15 people have been killed, and seven villages have been razed in a violent attack by the notorious Lakurawa terrorist group in the Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Confirming the incident to Radio Nigeria, the Council Chairman, Alhaji Sani Aliyu, stated that security operatives had been deployed to the affected communities to restore order and safeguard lives and property.
Eyewitnesses reported that the rampage, which occurred late Sunday night, was a retaliatory strike following the killing of the group’s leader, Maigemu, by security forces last week. A local resident, Malam Umar, revealed that the assailants torched villages near Birnin Dede but spared one settlement, which was under military protection.
“The terrorists came in large numbers, setting houses ablaze and attacking residents. They claimed it was revenge for their leader’s death,” Umar said in a phone conversation.
Despite the gravity of the attack, the Kebbi State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement. Repeated attempts to reach the command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, for comments have been unsuccessful.
The attack underscores the growing security challenges in Nigeria’s northwestern region, where armed groups continue to wreak havoc on rural communities.
