Tinubu Declares African Military Games Open, Calls for Unity
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on African military forces to unite in combating insecurity and safeguarding the continent’s stability.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 2nd African Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja on Wednesday evening, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the importance of collaboration among nations to tackle shared security challenges.
The event, themed “Enhancing Military Cooperation in Africa through Sports,” marks a revival of the games, first held over 20 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya.
“Our collective safety and the well-being of our people demand unity. This gathering is more than a competition; it is a testament to the cooperation that binds our military institutions,” Tinubu said at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
He commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), Maj. Gen. Maikano Abdullahi, for their efforts in reviving the tradition, describing the Games as a platform to foster camaraderie and resilience among military personnel.
Strengthening African Security through Sports
Gen. Musa highlighted the Games as a celebration of athleticism and a reminder of the bond uniting African armed forces. He urged the 1,625 athletes from across the continent to embody sportsmanship and friendship during the competition.
Maj. Gen. Abdullahi added that hosting the Games in Nigeria fulfills OSMA’s vision of fostering solidarity among African militaries. He noted that the event also showcases the rich cultural and athletic heritage of Africa’s armed forces.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony featured calisthenics displays, the lighting of the Games’ torch, flag hoisting, and an athlete oath-taking ceremony. Musical performances by stars like Timi Dakolo, Yemi Alade, Olamide, and D’banj thrilled attendees, alongside a spectacular fireworks display.
The Games, running from Nov. 18 to Nov. 30, feature 20 sporting events with participation from 1,625 athletes representing over 20 African nations.
With sports as a unifying force, the 2nd African Military Games promises to reinforce partnerships that strengthen the continent’s security and solidarity.
