The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Governor Babagana Zulum’s counterterrorism efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Borno State and the wider Northeast region.
During a courtesy visit to Maiduguri on Monday, British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Atkinson lauded Zulum’s dedication to tackling insurgency over the past decade.
She emphasised the UK’s ongoing partnership with Borno, particularly in addressing the humanitarian crisis affecting over 2.5 million displaced persons, including women and children.
“On behalf of the British Government, I recognise the tireless efforts of His Excellency in combating insurgency,” Atkinson stated.
“The UK remains committed to supporting the people of Borno as they work towards a peaceful and prosperous future.”
Beyond counterterrorism support, Atkinson highlighted the UK’s broader commitment to regional stability, reaffirming its role in strengthening peace and sustainable solutions through ongoing stabilisation initiatives in the Lake Chad region.
Governor Zulum, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tijjani Bukar, expressed deep gratitude for the UK’s unwavering support.
“His Excellency appreciates your various forms of assistance, and he has specifically instructed me to convey his special message of appreciation,” Bukar stated.
The partnership between Borno State and the UK underscores a shared commitment to ending insurgency and fostering long-term stability in the region.
