Women Journalists Urged to Lead the Charge for Equality, Empowerment
Women journalists have been called upon to amplify female voices and champion equity in society, using their platforms to drive meaningful change.
Speaking at the International Women’s Day (IWD) 2024 event hosted by the Gombe State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), guest speaker Hajiya Zariyatu Abubakar emphasized the need for women to take deliberate steps toward empowerment and societal transformation.
Under the theme “Accelerate Action,” Hajiya Zariyatu described equity and equality as urgent priorities, encouraging women to harness their inner strength, set clear goals, and remain focused on dismantling societal barriers. While acknowledging progress, she stressed the need for sustained efforts to achieve true inclusivity.
“As women journalists, you have the power to spotlight women’s issues and hold policymakers accountable. Use your platform wisely and persistently,” she urged.
She further encouraged media professionals to drive public awareness on gender-related challenges and inspire more women to step into leadership roles.
Earlier, NAWOJ Gombe Chairperson, Bome Aaron Samutar, called on members to remain proactive, professional, and united in advancing the association’s mission.
The event, held at the Old GMC Newsroom, also served as NAWOJ’s first-quarter congress, featuring interactive sessions where members shared experiences and strategies to promote gender parity in the media industry.
