Yobe communities excited over completion of roads after decades of neglect.
The residents of five communities are excited over the completion of 51.5 km of roads that will ease the commuting and haulage of their harvested crops and livestock in Yobe State.
The completed community roads comprise the Dawasa-Chukuriwa, Chumbusko-Tagali, and Karasuwa-Garinguna roads in Bade and Karasuwa Local Government Areas.
They expressed their commendations yesterday (Wednesday) in the Dawasa community during an inspection tour organised by the Yobe state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
A village head of Chukuriwa, Alhaji Mohammadu Chukuriwa, disclosed: “Our communities have been neglected for over three decades without any access road or other infrastructural facilities.”
He lamented that during the rainy season, residents are cut off from accessing hospitals and markets in towns and other communities for service delivery.
According to him, since the creation of the state in 1991, this is the first time Governor Mai Mala Buni has opened up about 10 communities with 51.5 km of roads in Bade, Fika, and Karasuwa local councils.
Kakdu Kafayo, a farmer, also said: “Before the completion of the 10-kilometre Chumbusko-Tagali road, we could hardly transport our farm produce to various markets within and outside the state.
“Now we are happy to be connected to other parts of the state.”
He noted that to complement the new community roads, the state government should also provide farmers with storage and preservation facilities.
He said the road has linked several villages along the route with the major towns of Potiskum and Damaturu, the state capital.
Chukuriwa, therefore, commended Buni and the Commissioner of Works, Umar Duddaye, for the building of a mosque in their communities.
He also commended the governor and the Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Umar Wakil Duddaye, for the construction of the of the Jumaat Mosque in Chukuriwa.
The Masaya of Kukuri, Malam Ishaku, also expressed appreciation for the completion of the community road project.
In Fika town, the residents of the local council were also jubilant over the completion of roads that link several communities to the outside world for trade and commerce.
A resident of Fika, Adamu Isa, said: “The road project has linked five political wards and three local government areas of Fika, Gujba, and Gulani.
“This includes having access to healthcare delivery services in Fika, Potiskum, and Damaturu,” said one of the community leaders in the council. ”
He added that the project had linked about five wards and three local government areas in Fika, Gujba, and Gulani.
In his remarks, the NUJ Chairman, Rajab Ismail, expressed appreciation for the road project for its outstanding performance in opening up the communities for agricultural activities and trade.
He, therefore, urged other governors to emulate Buni in transforming rural areas to halt the migration of youths to cities and towns for jobs.
