Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has said that 809,202 households were empowered with cash transfers of N3.91 billion in 2024.
According to him, the empowerment program was to cushion the economic hardships over the recent fuel subsidy removal.
Governor Buni, who was represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana, disclosed this on Thursday in Damaturu during the 2024 end-of-year media briefing.
He said over 201,300 individuals were also assisted with household stipends for their resilience during the over-a-decade Boko Haram insurgency.
He added that this year, 456,205 other households and 975,220 individuals were also reached with food and non-food items in the floods and insurgency-affected communities.
In achievements of government this year, in food security, Buni said, “We procured N15.3 billion in agricultural machinery and inputs in empowering 5,340 farmers to boost food security and their livelihoods in all the 17 Local Government Areas.”
He stated that the state government had spent N1.7 billion on the procurement of assorted grains for the strategic grains reserves for Yobe.
Besides food security, he added that the state, during the year under review, won a prize of $500,000 (N800 million) for the primary healthcare leadership challenges in the Northeast.
According to him, the 2024 hazard allowances of all health workers had been paid.
The Governor also highlighted the 2024 achievements of living conditions of people in the health, housing, trade, and industry sectors of the economy.
While in the education and environment sectors, he noted that over two dozen secondary schools and colleges were built and equipped to sustain basic and higher education for children and students.
“People with disabilities (PWDs) were not exempted from our achievements in the various sectors of the economy,” he noted, stating 350 tricycle-wheelchairs were distributed to them last month.
In his remarks, the chairman of the State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Rajab Ismail, said that the Buni administration has provided an enabling environment for journalists to practice their profession without any fear or favour.
He, therefore, warned that as they continue to remain apolitical, journalists should adhere strictly to the ethics of the profession at all times.
