Yobe Governor Buni Signs Disability Rights Law, Increases Pensioners’ Benefits
Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, has signed into law a bill establishing the Yobe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities. The legislation, passed by the state legislature, aims to enhance the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities.
In a statement issued by Alhaji Buba Garba, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, the commission is expected to coordinate activities and address the needs of persons with disabilities across the state. Governor Buni emphasized that the commission will empower individuals with disabilities to contribute meaningfully to society, affirming that “disabilities are abilities.”
The governor’s action underscores his administration’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and providing a sense of belonging to all citizens, particularly marginalized groups.
Pensioners Receive Boost in Benefits
In a related development, Governor Buni’s administration has increased the take-home pay of pensioners in the state by ₦32,000, bringing relief to retirees amid rising economic challenges.
Speaking at a public forum in Damaturu, Governor Buni announced the payment of the new minimum wage in December 2024, which has significantly improved pensioners’ purchasing power. He highlighted that this is the first wage increment for retirees since the creation of Yobe State.
The governor reiterated his commitment to enhancing the welfare of civil servants and retirees, ensuring they reap the rewards of their service and enjoy a higher standard of living in retirement.
