Yobe Govt donates food, non-food items to 475 Almajiri schools
The Yobe Emergency Management Agency (YSEMA) says it has begun the distribution of food and non-items to 475 Almajiri schools across the state.
The word “Almajiri” is derived from the Arabic “Al Muhajirun,” meaning “an emigrant”. It refers to a person who migrates from his home in search of Islamic knowledge.
The term also refers to any young person who begs on the streets and does not attend secular school.
The Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr. Mohammad Goje told the journalist in Damaturu that the support was under Buni Tsangaya School Programme.
He said the Agency had earlier supported 85 Almajiri schools with the items in three of the 17 local government areas of the state.

Goje listed the benefiting LGAs to Damaturu, Potiskum and Jakuso selected from each of the three senatorial districts in the state.
He said the items include bags of rice, maize, seasoning, soap, blankets, nylon mats, buckets, rubber bowls, cups, and clothes.
“Buni Tsangaya School Support is a project conceived by Gov. Mai Mala Buni, aimed at cushioning the hardships of Tsangaya Teachers and Almajiri pupils in line with government interventions for vulnerable groups.
“The support includes the distribution of winter clothes and blankets meant to cushion the effect of the biting cold, especially on the little Almajiri children.
“Three other local government areas from each of three senatorial zones would be picked in the subsequent batches,” he said.
