Yobe youths beg Buhari to extend NEDC MD’s tenure in office

The Yobe state chapter of the North East Youths Discussion Cycle (NEYDC), has begged President Muhammadu Buhari to extend the tenure of the Managing Director of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Mohammed Alkali draws.
According to the youths, the tenure extension, could ‘consolidate and sustain’ the Commission’s concrete achievements in improving the living conditions of the people in the region.
He lamented the devastation of the region during the 13-year Boko Haram insurgency that claimed many lives and property.

Unveiling the achievements of NEDC, over the weekend (Saturday), in Maiduguri, the Chairman of NEYDC, Mohammed Sani Hassan, disclosed that the youths have passed a vote of confidence on Alkali and presented him with an award of excellence.
His words: “My fellow brothers and sisters from the six states comprising Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Taraba and Gombe gathered here today in Maiduguri to unveil the achievement of Commission under the leadership of MD/CEO, Mohammed Alkali.
“It has become imperative to address you and the public of an issue that becomes important to the progressive survival of the North East and the country at large.”
He noted that the establishment of the Commission in October 2017 by President was to lead the reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement of the region destroyed by Boko Haram since July 2009.
He attributed the achievements of the Commission to the adherence to “transparency and accountability” in resource allocations for the executed projects in various sectors of the economy between 2017 and 2023.
Continued; “This is not unconnected to the giant strides of the Commission in ensuring transparency and accountability of resources allocated to it.
“These are the benefits to the entire people in the region, under the leadership of Alkali.
“He is a genuine leader whose ambition has been to deliver the mandate of the Commission, which is in line with its vision and mission.”
He noted that the NEDC has strategically been assessing, reviewing, and implementing key strategic programme of fighting unemployment and poverty in the region.
According to him, the development of the North-East Stabilization and Development Master Plan (NESDMP), is a roadmap to the region’s Reconstruction, Resettlement and Renewal processes.
He noted that these could ensure the redevelopment and sustained economic growth and development of the region, as the master plan focusses on reducing poverty and unemployment.
Among some of the achievements of the Commission, included the completion of 3, 500 housing units for displaced persons, capacity building of 4, 000 youths on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), establishment of ICT resource centres and among other projects executed in the last six years.
He added that the Commission has intervened in the agriculture, Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), health, education and infrastructural facilities sectors
He noted that the completed projects are in line with the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).
