The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in combating banditry in Zamfara State, rather than engaging in a war of words with Governor Dauda Lawal. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stressed that victory against banditry requires a united front and cooperation from the Governor and the people of Zamfara State.
Speaking at a bi-weekly media briefing in Abuja, General Buba reiterated the military’s commitment to restoring peace and security in the region. He highlighted the achievements of troops in the region, including the neutralization of 197 terrorists, arrest of 310 suspects, and rescue of 251 kidnapped hostages.
Despite the loss of nine personnel in June, the military has also recovered 180 assorted weapons, 5,123 ammunition, and destroyed terrorist infrastructure. General Buba emphasized the importance of citizen support in the war against terror, stating that “winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible.”
The DHQ’s stance comes after Governor Lawal’s recent allegations of military inaction and complicity in the fight against banditry. However, the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police has announced the arrest of politicians and traditional rulers implicated in banditry activities, hinting at collusion with criminals.
The military has reiterated its willingness to engage with the Zamfara State Governor and dismissed allegations of wrongdoing, urging citizens to understand the importance of supporting the war against terror.
