Zulum Vows to Strengthen Trade, Business Ties with Chad
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening economic ties with Chad, focusing on reviving trade and socio-economic activities disrupted by the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency.
The Governor made this pledge while hosting a delegation from Chad led by General Abdulkarim Idris Derby Itno. The visit, aimed at expressing solidarity following recent floods in Maiduguri, underscored Chad’s support for Borno during these challenges.
During the meeting, Zulum announced plans for an upcoming visit to Chad to engage President Mahamat Idris Derby Itno on regional trade and economic cooperation. “I will soon pay a visit to Chad to discuss mutual interests, especially the restoration of waterway transport between Baga town and Chad to facilitate commerce,” he stated.
In addition to trade discussions, Zulum revealed plans to collaborate with the chambers of commerce in Chad and northeastern Nigeria to strengthen economic partnerships. He also expressed intent to expedite the repatriation of Nigerians currently sheltered in Baga Sola, Chad, following disruptions caused by insurgency.
The Governor extended condolences for the recent loss of Chadian soldiers in a Boko Haram ambush and praised President Derby’s leadership in countering insurgency threats.
General Abdulkarim Idris Derby Itno conveyed President Derby’s sympathy over the recent flooding in Maiduguri and emphasized the close cultural ties between the people of Chad and Borno, describing them as “one people” with shared traditions. He also noted President Derby’s active role in leading counterinsurgency efforts against Boko Haram in the region.
