2 Lionesses Rescued from Ukraine Set to Find New Home in Scottish Zoo
Two lionesses rescued from conflict zones in Ukraine are soon to find refuge at a Scottish zoo. Five Sisters Zoo, located near the village of Polbeth, is preparing to welcome Luna and Plusza, who were evacuated from an area heavily affected by shelling in eastern Ukraine in 2022.
Initially sheltered in Kyiv, the lionesses were later moved to Poland before arriving at the Natuurhulpcentrum animal shelter in Oudsbergen, Belgium.
Their new permanent home at Five Sisters Zoo is part of the facility’s ongoing commitment to rehabilitating animals that have faced adversity.
Since its inception, Five Sisters Zoo has been dedicated to helping animals in need. This initiative began in October 2015 when the zoo took in four lions—Boss, Skinny, Twin 1, and Twin 2—rescued from a traveling circus in Belgium.
Gary Curran, head of carnivores at the zoo, stated, “The arrival of Luna and Plusza is a continuation of our long-standing commitment to giving lions a second chance at life. Our team is prepared to provide these lionesses with the best care possible, ensuring they can live out their lives in peace, just as we did for Boss, Skinny, and the others.”
Currently, only Skinny remains from the original pride, as Boss and the twin brothers have since passed away. The lionesses will enjoy a specially designed habitat at Five Sisters Zoo, providing them with ample space and comfort.
