Adamawa APC Elders Reject Consensus, Back Peter Fwa for Senate Race
By Musa Garba, Yola
A coalition of elders within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Southern Adamawa has opposed any move to adopt consensus arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that only open and transparent primaries can guarantee fairness within the party.
The position was made known on Friday during a gathering held in Numan Local Government Area, where the elders formally endorsed Mr Peter Fwa for the Adamawa South Senatorial seat.
The Adamawa South Senatorial District comprises the following local government areas: Numan, Lamurde, Demsa, Guyuk, Shelleng, Ganye, Jada, Mayo-Belwa, and Toungo.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr Muyinani Aini said the elders had carefully assessed political developments within the APC as preparations for the next general election gather momentum.
He explained that the group favours a democratic primary process that would allow party members to freely choose their candidates rather than adopt consensus arrangements.
“We believe the party should embrace a transparent and peaceful primary election process. Direct primaries remain the best option for ensuring credibility and fairness,” Aini stated.
He added that, despite ongoing political consultations and alignments within the party, the elders considered Peter Fwa the most suitable aspirant to represent the district in the Senate race.
According to him, Fwa’s political history and loyalty to the APC distinguished him among other contenders.
Aini recalled that Fwa contested for the same senatorial position in 2019 and enjoyed widespread support before eventually stepping aside in the interest of party unity.
“He demonstrated discipline and respect for party leadership by yielding to collective decisions at the time. Since then, he has remained committed to the APC without seeking personal rewards or appointments,” he said.
The APC elder further described Fwa as a grassroots politician who had consistently contributed to party growth across wards, local governments and the state.
He noted that the aspirant had also supported various community-based programs, including youth empowerment initiatives, scholarship schemes, skill acquisition projects, and peace-building activities across the southern zone.
While acknowledging the credentials of other aspirants, Aini argued that many former office holders from the area had not delivered enough developmental impact despite occupying public positions for years.
The group therefore appealed to key political stakeholders, including Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and APC leaders in the state, to support Fwa’s ambition ahead of the 2027 polls.
Aini said the endorsement reflected the collective decision of the elders, expressing optimism that the move would strengthen the APC’s chances in the forthcoming elections.

Salihu made the declaration on Wednesday in Yola, where he unveiled his governorship aspiration before party supporters and stakeholders.
The former North-East Zonal Vice Chairman of the APC said his administration, if elected, would preserve and advance the achievements recorded under Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, particularly in infrastructure renewal, economic growth, and social intervention programmes.

Madagali gave the assurance on Friday in Jimeta when he received one of the party’s governorship hopefuls, Mr Felix Tangwami, stressing that fairness and equal opportunity would guide the selection process.
He said the party leadership under his watch would not favour any aspirant, ensuring that all contestants would compete on a level field.
“Every aspirant will be given a fair chance. We are determined to organise a primary election that reflects the true will of party members and upholds democratic values,” he stated.
The APC chairman further noted that the same standard of transparency would apply across all elective contests, from the State House of Assembly to the governorship, adding that the party is committed to strengthening internal democracy.
Earlier, Tangwami, who currently serves as the Commissioner for Health in the state, congratulated Madagali on his emergence as party chairman and reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC.
He explained that his visit was to formally inform the party leadership of his intention to contest the governorship, describing his ambition as a call to serve the people of Adamawa.
According to him, unity, discipline and respect for party structures will remain central to his political journey.
Tangwami acknowledged the strides recorded under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, noting that his experience in government has positioned him to build on existing achievements while introducing fresh ideas.
He outlined key areas of focus to include economic growth, industrial development, youth and women empowerment, agriculture, improved healthcare delivery, enhanced security and affordable housing.
“Our goal is to expand opportunities, support businesses and improve the overall quality of life for our people,” he said.
The aspirant also emphasised the importance of credible primaries, rejecting any form of candidate imposition and insisting that a transparent process remains the best way to produce widely accepted leaders.
In a separate engagement, Tangwami met with members of the Forum of Special Assistants to the Governor, where he reiterated his commitment to inclusive leadership and accountability.
Speaking on behalf of the forum, its chairman, Mr Adamu Kiri, expressed confidence in Tangwami’s capacity and urged him to actively participate in the primary election, warning against consensus arrangements that could weaken democratic credibility within the party.
