Calls Grow for Equal Treatment as Abducted Borno Pupils Remain Missing
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
Concern is mounting in Borno State following what residents and civil society groups describe as a slow and inadequate federal response to the abduction of dozens of schoolchildren in Askira/Uba Local Government Area.
Community leaders, activists and political stakeholders have expressed frustration over the government’s handling of the incident, arguing that the kidnapping of pupils in the Northeast has not attracted the same level of attention and urgency seen in similar cases elsewhere in the country.
The controversy follows the abduction of dozens of primary and junior secondary school pupils from the Mussa community in Askira/Uba, allegedly by insurgents. Residents say families of the victims have been left anxious as they await concrete information on rescue efforts.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Monday, Chairman of the Borno State Civil Society Organisations, Abubakar Suleiman, criticised what he described as unequal treatment of victims of mass abductions across different parts of Nigeria.
According to him, while a recent kidnapping incident involving pupils and teachers in Oyo State attracted the immediate attention of top federal officials, communities in Borno affected by similar tragedies have not witnessed a comparable intervention.
Suleiman noted that several abduction incidents have occurred in parts of Borno in recent weeks, yet families and local communities have received little direct engagement from federal authorities. For those seeking other avenues of information or connection, platforms where Australians can learn more about online services and entertainment options are also readily accessible.
He urged the government to intensify rescue operations and maintain regular communication with affected families.
“The parents deserve reassurance that everything possible is being done to secure the release of their children. They also deserve timely information about ongoing efforts,” he said.
A political analyst based in Borno, Abubakar Kareto, also expressed concern over what he described as disparities in official responses to security emergencies.
He observed that the attacks in Oyo and Askira/Uba reportedly occurred within the same period but generated markedly different levels of federal attention.
Kareto argued that every mass abduction, regardless of location, should receive the same level of urgency and deployment of security resources.
According to him, any perception of unequal treatment risks deepening feelings of neglect among communities already facing the challenges of insurgency and insecurity.
He called on President Bola Tinubu and security agencies to intensify intelligence gathering and military operations aimed at rescuing the abducted children and restoring public confidence.
“The safety of every Nigerian child must be treated as a national priority. Victims in the Northeast deserve the same commitment and urgency accorded to victims anywhere else in the country,” he said.
Also weighing in, President of the Borno South Youths Alliance Forum, Samaila Kaigama, appealed to political leaders and elected representatives from the state to become more vocal in advocating for affected communities.
He urged stakeholders to unite in pressing for stronger federal intervention, emphasising that the plight of abducted children should transcend political and regional considerations.
The incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of schools in rural communities, particularly in areas affected by insurgency. Security experts have repeatedly warned that educational institutions remain attractive targets for armed groups operating in parts of the Northeast.
As families continue to wait for positive news, residents say they expect both federal and state authorities to demonstrate greater commitment to securing the release of all those still in captivity and preventing future attacks on schools.

Troops Kill Six ISWAP Terrorists, Recover Arms Cache in Adamawa
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have killed six suspected insurgents and recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition after repelling an attack on a military base in Garaha community, Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The attack targeted the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Garaha at about 9:07 p.m., when suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters advanced on foot from the LAR axis in an attempt to overrun the military position.
The military said the troops responded with superior firepower and coordinated tactics, forcing the attackers to retreat after an exchange of gunfire that lasted about two hours.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Tola, the Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba Goni, said the troops successfully repelled the assault and recovered weapons and other military equipment.
A subsequent search of the area, he said, led to the discovery of six insurgent corpses, confirming the number of terrorists killed during the encounter.
The recovered weapons included one PKT machine gun, three ammunition belts containing 67 rounds, six AK-47 rifles, 11 AK-47 magazines, 157 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one 60mm mortar bomb.
Other items recovered from the scene were an Infinix Android phone, a Canon portable video recorder, three camelback water bags, a magazine carrier and assorted clothing.
Although some soldiers sustained injuries during the confrontation, the military said the affected personnel were receiving medical attention, while arrangements were being made for their evacuation where necessary.
The troops have since intensified surveillance and search operations around the area to prevent further attacks and identify or recover additional items of operational importance.
The military described the successful defence of the base as a demonstration of the troops’ combat readiness and determination to prevent insurgents from overrunning their positions in the North-East.
It added that Operation Hadin Kai would continue to conduct intelligence-led operations to restrict the movement of insurgents, protect vulnerable communities and support efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the region.

Troops Kill 21 Boko Haram, ISWAP Fighters, Destroy Terrorist Camp in Adamawa
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
Troops conducting counter-terrorism operations in Adamawa State have killed more than 21 suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during an offensive around the Kopre Mountain area of Hong Local Government Area.
The operation, conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) alongside the Office of the National Security Adviser’s Tactical Team and personnel of the 226 Battalion, followed intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists in the mountainous terrain.
The Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Capt. Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to him, troops moved into the difficult terrain in the early hours of Wednesday and engaged the terrorists in two separate encounters.
“More than 21 suspected terrorists were killed, while others escaped with gunshot wounds,” the military spokesman said.
Goni said the troops subsequently overran the terrorists’ camp, destroying structures, equipment and supplies believed to have been used to sustain their activities in the area.
Items destroyed during the operation included motorcycles, bicycles and jerry cans containing petrol, which the military said were part of the terrorists’ logistical network.
The troops also recovered several weapons and ammunition, including AK-47 rifles, magazines and a substantial quantity of 7.62mm ammunition.
The latest offensive is part of intensified military efforts to locate civilians abducted from communities in the North-East and disrupt terrorist networks operating across the region.
The military said the operation was linked to efforts to trace victims abducted from the Mussa community and the Lassa school following separate incidents reported in 2026.
Hong Local Government Area, characterised by rugged mountains and extensive forest cover, has remained challenging for security forces because of the terrain, which can provide hiding places for armed groups.
The military has increasingly relied on intelligence-driven operations, supported by ground troops, to locate terrorist hideouts, destroy their logistics and rescue civilians held by insurgents.
Goni assured that Operation Hadin Kai would sustain its offensive against terrorist groups, with particular attention to locating abducted persons and dismantling camps and supply routes used by the insurgents.
