ASUP Strike Looms as Government Misses 15-Day Ultimatum Deadline
As the 15-day ultimatum given by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to the Federal Government nears its expiration, concerns over an impending strike grow among students and lecturers. The union had demanded the government address issues surrounding the new scheme of service for polytechnic lecturers nationwide.
The ultimatum, set to expire at midnight on Wednesday, October 23, could trigger strike action if the government fails to meet ASUP’s demands.
ASUP’s Zone D coordinator, Iloma Richard, expressed disappointment, noting that the union had initially suspended its planned strike on July 22, hoping for government action in resolving the issues through the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“Unfortunately, there has been no progress due to NBTE’s reluctance,” Richard stated, adding that the union is ready to mobilize its members for a strike if the government’s inaction continues past the deadline.
