By Ahmed Ahmed
Some Female politicians in Bauchi state, on Wednesday in Bauchi advocated for the right to participate equally in democratic governance in the state.
Some of the women told our correspondent in an interview that with their proven abilities as leaders and agents of change, their right to participate equally in democratic governance was denied.
Hajiya Aishatu Abdullahi, the Women Leader PDP, Sabon Kaura Ward said “we support gender equality advocates that call on political parties, governments and others to do their part in empowering women.
“From the local to state and federal governments, women leadership and political participation are restricted.
She stressed the need to promote programmes that would foster leadership skills for girls and women and promote gender equality.
Mrs Selina Aliyu, a Christian woman in politics explained that women are underrepresented as voters and in leading positions.
“Either in elected offices, the civil service, the private sector or academic, we should also have the right to participate.’’
Mrs Rakiya Ahmed, an APC supporter, said women face several obstacles like structural barriers through discrimination to participate in politics.
“Some of the institutions still limit women’s options to run for offices, Paving the way for more women in the political, business, and the civic arena is an investment in more just, equitable, and peaceful societies.”
Mr Yakubu Munkailu, the Zonal Chairman, Bauchi South, United People Congress (UPC) said women have the right to engage in civil society; vote in elections; be elected to a government office and serve on boards.
“The female gender also has the right to make their voices heard in any process that will ultimately affect them, their families, and their communities.
“Therefore, investing in girls and women right to political participation is a necessary step to achieving gender equality and democratic governance.”
Mrs Mary Emmanuel, the Programme Coordinator, Attah Sisters Foundation (ASHHF) said they will continue to sensitise women participation in politics and decision-making.
“We organised focus group discussion to address impediments to women participation in politics with the support of Nigeria Women’s Trust Foundation and Ford Foundation,” She said.
