The Borno State Demarcation Committee (BODC) has marked 500 houses and other structures along the Maiduguri riverbanks for demolition.
According to the committee, the marked structures are on the banks of the rivers Yedzaram and Ngadda that crisscross Maiduguri metropolis and its environs.
Chairman of the committee, Liman Gana Mustapha, in a statement yesterday (Tuesday), in Maiduguri disclosed: “The marked structures are in Fori, Forestry Quarters, Galtimari, and the Shettimari New GRA communities,” adding some of the marked structures are also at Lagos Street bridge.
He said the delineation of buffer zones along the riverbanks was to reduce flood risks in protecting the communities from “unregulated development” of land in Maiduguri.
Besides the marking of structures, he noted that the delineated buffer zones will promote and sustain effective urban planning of the metropolis and its environs.
Mustapha, therefore, urged residents to fully cooperate and support the state government in creating a safer environment for everyone.
He reiterated that the delineations of buffer zones along the riverbanks are also in line with the land-use laws governing the development lands.
