Borno Govt, FAO Distribute Farming Inputs to 24,500 Farmers
The Borno State Government, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, has launched the distribution of dry season farming inputs to assist 24,500 farmers impacted by recent floods in the state.
The initiative, flagged off by Deputy Governor Alhaji Usman Kadafur in Khaddamari town, Jere Local Government Area (LGA), aims to boost food security and rebuild agricultural livelihoods in Borno and the broader North-East region.
Kadafur emphasized that the support program, which is part of efforts targeting 49,000 farmers across the North-East, includes high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides for farmers in 12 LGAs in Borno.
Speaking at the event, FAO Representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Dominique Kouacou, highlighted the devastating impact of October’s floods, which submerged 4.5 million hectares of farmland, resulting in nearly $1 billion in potential cereal crop revenue losses. He noted that the intervention is crucial for restoring livelihoods and enhancing agricultural sustainability.
The FAO is also providing solar-powered water pumps and distributing Tom Brown nutrition packages and fuel-efficient stoves to 300 households to combat malnutrition and promote environmental conservation.
Mrs. Tina Olayimidi of Samaritan Care, a partner organization, disclosed plans to distribute bio-waste coal briquettes, vegetable seedlings, and nutritional supplements to children under five and pregnant women as part of the initiative.
Hajiya Inna Galadima, Chairperson of Jere LGA, expressed appreciation to the government and FAO, describing the program as a critical step toward achieving food security and zero hunger in the region.
One of the beneficiaries, Bulama Goni, praised the initiative, stating that the support would significantly alleviate their challenges and improve their livelihoods.
