Borno govt, World Bank Collaborate to Boost Livestock Production in State
In a significant effort to enhance livestock production and support economic development, the Borno State Government has partnered with the World Bank to train 100 extension agents.
The training, which falls under the World Bank Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-Press), aims to revitalise the state’s vital livestock sector.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Maiduguri, Mr. Ibrahim Izge, the Programme Manager of Borno State Agricultural Development Programme, emphasised the importance of this initiative. He highlighted that the training comes at a crucial time as the state is recovering from years of insurgency, which severely impacted its agricultural sector.
The Borno State administration, led by Governor Babagana Zulum, remains committed to boosting livestock production for socio-economic development and improved nutrition. Livestock plays a vital role in the livelihoods of many communities, and this collaboration seeks to strengthen the sector.
Dr. Umar Suleiman, a National Extension Officer facilitating the training, explained that the project spans six years. Its objective is to enhance the production of cattle, sheep, and goats through modern practices, ultimately increasing farmers’ income. Additionally, the project aims to stimulate commercial activities by supporting the entire value chain within the livestock sector and enhancing its resilience against challenges like climate change.
Dr. Makinta Ali, the State Project Coordinator, emphasised the crucial role of agricultural extension agents. These agents are essential for disseminating knowledge to farmers, and the trainees are encouraged to apply their newly acquired knowledge to transform the livestock sector. The focus is particularly on targeted livestock-dependent communities.
Dr. Ya’kolo Abba-Aji, the Animal Health Officer, expressed optimism about the training’s impact. She believes it will lead to results-oriented services, aligned with the project’s objectives.
This collaborative effort between the Borno Government and the World Bank holds promise for a more resilient and productive livestock sector, benefiting both farmers and the state’s economy.
