A cholera outbreak has spread across 10 states in Nigeria, claiming 30 lives and infecting 1,141 people, according to the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA).
Director General CEO Dr Agnes Yemisi Asagbra in a public health advisory, urged citizens to take immediate action to prevent further spread of the disease. “We are working closely with health authorities to contain this outbreak, but we need the public’s cooperation to succeed.”
The outbreak has affected Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos states, with reports of new cases emerging daily.
Health experts warn that cholera can spread rapidly in areas with poor sanitation and hygiene. “We urge citizens to take simple precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Dr. Asagbra.
The NBMA has advised citizens to boil drinking water, wash hands regularly, cook food thoroughly, and avoid raw foods unless peeled or washed with safe water.
As the outbreak continues to spread, health authorities are racing against time to contain it. “We are doing everything possible to stop the spread of cholera, but we need the public’s help,” said Dr. Asagbra.
Citizens are urged to report any suspected cases to the nearest hospital immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in preventing fatalities.
The Nigerian government has assured citizens that it is doing everything possible to contain the outbreak and ensure the safety of all.
