By Auwal Ahmad Umar
The Daura Emirate Council in Katsina State has appointed Kano-based traditional medicine practitioner, Alhaji Dr Mukhtar Jibrin, as Sarkin Maganin Kasar Hausa Babba, in a move aimed at strengthening and promoting traditional medicine within the emirate.
The appointment, approved by the Sarkin Daura, Alhaji Dr Umar Faruk Umar, is also expected to support efforts to improve the practice of traditional medicine and encourage greater cooperation among practitioners.
The decision was conveyed in a letter dated August 19, 2026, addressed to Dr Jibrin at his residence in Hotoro-GRA, Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.
In the letter, the Daura Emirate Council said the appointment was based on Dr Jibrin’s contributions to helping people seeking solutions to health challenges and his efforts to advance traditional medicine.
The council said it was aware of his contributions to improving the welfare of members of the community and promoting the practice of traditional medicine.
“Mun zartas da wannan kuduri ne a dalilin gudummuwar da kake bayarwa wajen taimakawa al’umma masu neman mafita daga irin lalurorin dake damunsu na rashin lafiya,” the letter stated.
The council also acknowledged Dr Jibrin’s role in promoting better practices among traditional medicine practitioners.
“Muna kuma sane da irin gudummuwar dake bayarwa wajen tsabtace da inganta magungunan gargajiya da kuma hada kan dukkan masu yin wannan sana’a,” the letter added.
The appointment, according to the council, was made on merit following consideration of Dr Jibrin’s contributions to the community and traditional medicine.
It said the formal ceremony for his installation would take place after a date was agreed upon.
“Don haka, mun baka wannan sarauta ne bisa cancanta,” the Sarkin Daura said in the letter.
The Emir also congratulated Dr Jibrin on the appointment and urged him to remain committed to the responsibilities associated with the traditional title.
“Ina tayaka murnar baka wannan Sarauta tare da fatan Allah Ya yi maka jagora. Ya taimaka maka wajen riko,” he said.
The appointment comes amid growing calls for stronger recognition, organisation and regulation of traditional medicine as part of efforts to preserve indigenous knowledge and improve healthcare practices in communities.
