The Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Umar-Ibn El-Kanemi, has defied the recent floods that devastated the Maiduguri metropolis by remaining in the palace for over a month.
According to him, the volunteers and other security guards swap into action by protecting the palace with hundreds of sandbags.
Unveiling the monarch’s defiance of floods at the palace on Saturday in Maiduguri, the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Isa Kwarra, disclosed: “I commend the Shehu’s remarkable resilience during the September 10, 2024, floods that devastated the entire metropolis, including the monarch’s palace.”
He noted that the Shehu’s decision to remain in his palace has inspired thousands of flood victims to remain in their communities without fleeing to the neighbouring states of Yobe and Adamawa.
The NPC boss also reiterated the monarch’s critical role in encouraging the people in the state to overcome the challenges of floods with courage and determination.
While expressing sympathy for the loss of 50 lives, Kwarra said, “May their souls rest in peace, while I pray that such flood disasters would not occur in destroying people’s lives and property in the Northeast.
Responding to the commendations on floods, the Shehu appreciated the Commission’s visit over the destruction of infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and affected communities on the riverbanks.
After the sympathy visit, Kwarra led another visit to Governor Babagana Zulum at Government House, Maiduguri.
Members of the NPC delegation also inspected the state office to assess the level of damage to structures and other census facilities recently installed for the national headcount.
