DEPOWA President Calls for Action Against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse in Barracks
In a bid to tackle the pervasive issue of sexual exploitation and abuse within military barracks, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), has urged for collective efforts during a recent seminar held in Abuja.
Under the theme “Preventing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse,” the seminar marked Mrs. Musa’s one-year anniversary as DEPOWA’s 15th President. Addressing the audience, she emphasized the urgent need to address this troubling issue, which affects not only barracks communities but society at large.
Mrs. Musa underscored the severity of unreported cases and echoed the sentiment of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, affirming that “Sexual Exploitation and Abuse have no place in our society.” She highlighted DEPOWA’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of these crimes through education and awareness.
The seminar also addressed the growing concern of drug abuse among barracks youth. Dr. Chika Anozie, a key speaker, discussed the risks associated with teenage drug abuse, stressing the importance of preventive measures and awareness among young people.
Dr. Olajumoke Jenyo, another expert at the event, presented on “Sexual Exploitation and Abuse: Prevention and Response,” revealing alarming statistics that underscored the need for increased sensitization and support for victims.
Reflecting on DEPOWA’s achievements over the past year, Mrs. Musa praised the association’s impact on the lives of women and youth through initiatives in healthcare, fitness, education, agriculture, and skills training. She reaffirmed DEPOWA’s commitment to empowering women and girls, emphasizing values and hard work as guiding principles.
The event concluded with Mrs. Musa reaffirming DEPOWA’s unwavering support for victims of sexual exploitation and abuse, pledging to hold perpetrators accountable and urging authorities to take decisive action.
As DEPOWA continues its mission to foster a safe and supportive environment within barracks communities, Mrs. Musa expressed optimism about future endeavors, promising sustained efforts to uplift and empower those within their sphere of influence.
