EU Boosts Support for Rwanda’s Mission in Mozambique with $21M Funding
The European Union Council has pledged €20 million to support the Rwanda Defence Force’s mission in Mozambique, doubling their previous commitment from 2022.
This funding aims to combat the Islamic State-backed insurgency in Cabo Delgado Province, where Rwandan forces have played a crucial role in holding back the insurgency for three years.
Rwanda’s presence has been instrumental in stabilizing the region, enabling progress and facilitating the return of displaced residents to their homes ¹ ².
The EU’s support is a testament to their endorsement of “African solutions for African problems,” as stated by Josep Borrell, EU foreign affairs chief.
However, this deal has sparked tensions, particularly due to concerns about Rwanda’s alleged involvement with M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Belgium has condemned Rwanda’s actions and ensured that the funding comes with the condition that it must only be used for operations in Mozambique.
The additional funding brings the total EU support to Rwanda’s mission in Mozambique to €40 million. This development highlights the complex nature of international cooperation in addressing regional security challenges
