FG to Deploy Drones for Enhanced Agricultural Productivity – Minister Kyari
The Federal Government plans to adopt advanced technology, including drones, to ensure year-round farming and boost agricultural productivity, according to Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security.
Addressing State House correspondents on Tuesday, Kyari emphasized the transformative potential of drone technology in agricultural operations.
“The faster we clear land, harvest, and apply chemicals—be it pesticides or herbicides—the better our productivity,” Kyari said. “We intend to use drone technology because what one drone can achieve in a day cannot be matched by a hundred people. This will fast-track agricultural activities, enable quicker harvests, and prepare land for the next cultivation cycle.”
Kyari highlighted plans to partner with the private sector to involve vibrant youths in the ministry’s mechanization program, aiming to modernize farming practices.
“It is crucial to educate our farmers that agriculture is no longer just for subsistence but a business capable of sustaining livelihoods,” he said. “Input support alone may not incentivize smallholder farmers adequately. We need to shift the mindset and engage them in ways that attract private sector funding for agricultural production.”
Kyari reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming agriculture into a viable economic sector while ensuring food security.
