The Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN) has supported 500 pregnant women and nursing mothers with N10.2 million flood relief materials in Borno.
According to the association, the donated flood relief materials are distributed by the state’s Flood Relief Distribution Committee (BFRDC).
Handing over the materials to the committee yesterday (Wednesday) in Maiduguri, Chairperson of the association Board of Trustees (BoT) and former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Alaja Lateefa Okannu, disclosed, “We are deeply moved with shock over the recent floods that destroyed many people’s lives and property.”
She noted that this informed FOMWAN to fully mobilise its members to contribute their widows’ mite to the vulnerable women in the flooded communities of Fori, Gambouru, Gwange I & II, Moduganari, and Moro-Moro.
According to her, the donated flood relief materials comprise cartons of detergents, soap, condiments, cooking oil, delivery kits, and bags of corn flour.
Additionally, Alaja stated that most hit women are from four local councils of Maiduguri Metropolitan, Jere, Mafa, and Konduga, which had the highest number of flood victims.
She, therefore, urged the committee members to thoroughly profile and screen the women who are in dire need of relief materials.
While thanking for the materials, the Chairman of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC), Tijani Umar Ali, commended the leadership of the association for saving the lives of both women and children in the state.
Some of the vulnerable women chanted, “Long live FOMWAN for the interventions; some of us could have died in the flood waters without the relief materials being distributed.”
