From Newsroom to Lecture Hall: The Remarkable Journey of Chief Ben Ngwakwe
Chief Ben Ngwakwe stands as a compelling example of how intellect, discipline, and public service can merge into a life of purpose. With a career that spans journalism, governance, academia, and community leadership, his story reflects not just professional success but a deep commitment to national development and public enlightenment.
Born into a family rooted in scholarship, Ngwakwe’s early exposure to history through his father, a respected historian—played a defining role in shaping his worldview. That foundation instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility, critical thinking, and a passion for communication. From his formative years through higher education, his academic journey has been marked by consistency, resilience, and a genuine pursuit of knowledge.
His academic profile reflects a deliberate and strategic blend of disciplines. Starting with a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication, he advanced to obtain a master’s degree in the same field, strengthening his theoretical and professional grounding in media practice. Not stopping there, he pursued a Master of Public Administration, further expanding his expertise into governance and policy. Currently undertaking a Doctor of Public Administration, Ngwakwe continues to demonstrate a commitment to intellectual growth and scholarly contribution. Additional qualifications in education and computing have also enhanced his teaching ability and digital competence, allowing him to effectively integrate technology into his curriculum and improve student engagement.
Professionally, Ngwakwe boasts over three decades of rich experience across multiple sectors. His journalism career, particularly within leading national newspapers, saw him rise through the ranks from State Editor to Bureau Chief—positions that required editorial precision, leadership, and a profound understanding of Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. His role as a gatekeeper of information and a shaper of public discourse earned him credibility and respect within the media industry.
Beyond the newsroom, his transition into public service further broadened his influence. Serving as Special Assistant on Special Duties and later as Personal Assistant to the Governor of Gombe State, he operated at the heart of governance. These roles exposed him to executive decision-making, policy implementation, and political communication, reinforcing his administrative competence and strategic insight.
Today, as an assistant lecturer, Ngwakwe brings a wealth of real-world experience into the classroom. His move into academia is a natural progression rather than a career shift, allowing him to mentor students with practical knowledge grounded in years of field experience. His teaching is enriched by his ability to connect theory with reality—an invaluable asset in higher education.
In the area of research, his scholarly contributions focus on media, governance, and institutional performance. His publications engage with pressing national issues, including public sector efficiency and security, reflecting both relevance and intellectual depth. While still expanding his academic output, his work shows strong potential for greater influence as he progresses in his doctoral studies.
Equally notable is his role in community leadership. Ngwakwe has served in multiple leadership positions within Igbo socio-cultural organisations in Northern Nigeria, including holding regional public relations responsibilities in a body representing 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory. His recognition as a traditional titleholder in Abia State further underscores his cultural significance and leadership stature. These roles highlight his ability to bridge communities, manage conflicts, and mobilise people toward shared goals.
On a personal level, he is widely regarded as articulate, disciplined, and ethically grounded. His reputation for integrity and dedication to national service complements his strong communication skills, both written and spoken. His passion for reading, writing, and analysing current affairs aligns seamlessly with his professional life.
Overall, Chief Ben Ngwakwe represents a rare blend of media expertise, administrative experience, and academic pursuit. His profile positions him for continued impact in academia, policy advisory roles, and leadership within both professional and civic spaces. With the completion of his doctoral programme, he is poised to take on even greater responsibilities as a thought leader and influencer in governance and communication.
As he marks his special birthday on February 24, 2026, tributes continue to pour in celebrating not just his achievements but also his enduring commitment to service, knowledge, and humanity. Colleagues, students, and well-wishers alike pray for his continued good health, divine guidance, and long life as he continues to inspire the next generation.

Governor Inuwa, who is also Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, joined an impressive gathering of national and international dignitaries at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Saturday to honour the former military leader and respected advocate of peace.
The event attracted former Heads of state, senior government officials, diplomats, traditional rulers, business leaders, and development partners from across Nigeria and beyond.
A major highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of three books dedicated to General Abdulsalami’s life and accomplishments. The publications include Call of Duty: An Autobiography of Gen. Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar, Nigeria’s Grand Patriot: Gen. Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar, and Mediating for Peace in Africa: A Festschrift in Honour of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.
The ceremony also featured a fundraising drive for the proposed Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre, an initiative designed to preserve and promote the former leader’s legacy in peacebuilding, leadership, and conflict resolution across the continent.
The project received overwhelming support, attracting nearly N2 billion in donations and pledges from prominent individuals, corporate organisations, and institutions.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the establishment of the resource centre. He described General Abdulsalami as a statesman whose contributions to democratic transition, national stability, and peacebuilding have left an enduring mark on the nation.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Inuwa Yahaya praised the former Head of State for his exceptional service to Nigeria, particularly his pivotal role in guiding the country back to democratic governance and his continued efforts in fostering peace and unity through the National Peace Committee.
According to the governor, General Abdulsalami remains one of Africa’s most respected voices on peace, dialogue, and democratic values.
“General Abdulsalami Abubakar remains a shining example of patriotism, humility, and statesmanship. His life of sacrifice, integrity, and service to humanity is worthy of celebration and emulation by present and future generations of leaders,” the governor said.
Governor Inuwa noted that the former military leader’s commitment to nation-building and conflict resolution continues to inspire leaders across Nigeria and Africa, describing his legacy as one that will endure for generations.
The event served not only as a celebration of a distinguished life but also as a recognition of General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s lasting contributions to democratic governance, national cohesion, and peacebuilding on the continent.
