HBM Nigeria Deepens Partnership with Lagos to Boost Environmental Sustainability

HBM Nigeria Plc has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by supporting the Lagos State Government’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, providing logistics and waste management services aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier city.
In collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, the company deployed trucks to evacuate waste generated during the sanitation exercise as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
The initiative aims to ensure prompt waste disposal and prevent refuse from washing back into drainage channels, especially during rainfall.
Beyond waste evacuation, HBM Nigeria said it is advancing sustainable waste management through its Geocycle operations by sorting refuse collected at designated dumpsites. Non-recyclable combustible materials are separated and transported to the company’s Ewekoro cement plant, where they are processed as alternative fuel for cement production.
The company noted that the initiative supports the circular economy by reducing landfill waste while converting suitable materials into valuable energy resources.
The sanitation exercise in Kosofe Local Government Area attracted several senior government officials, including the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro; the Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Mr Mobolaji Gaaji; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Wealth Creation, Mrs Ola Aina; the Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Hon. Moyosore Ogunlewe; HBM’s Head of Geocycle, Temitope Dosunmu; and the company’s Public Affairs and Communications Manager (West), Yemi Bakare.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr Agoro praised HBM Nigeria for its sustained contribution to the state’s environmental sanitation campaign, describing the company’s involvement as a model of responsible corporate citizenship.
He urged other private sector organisations to emulate HBM’s commitment to environmental protection, stressing that achieving a cleaner Lagos requires strong collaboration among government institutions, businesses, and residents.
According to the Head of Service, environmental sustainability cannot be achieved through government efforts alone, and that active participation by corporate organisations and members of the public remains essential to maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment.
HBM Nigeria said its continued partnership with the Lagos State Government reflects its long-term commitment to sustainable development, responsible waste management, and environmental stewardship across the country.
