Kano Government Rejects Proposed Tax Reform Bills, Calls for National Unity
The Kano State Government has firmly opposed the proposed tax reform bills under consideration in the National Assembly, citing concerns over their potential impact on citizens’ welfare.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, articulated this stance during the 2025 New Year celebration held at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre.
A statement by the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Garba Shu’aibu, outlined the government’s position. “This tax reform bill fails to address the pressing economic challenges we face. Kano State opposes any policy that compromises the welfare of our people,” Governor Yusuf stated.
The governor criticized the proposed tax increases as “untimely, inequitable, and harmful to national cohesion,” emphasizing the hardships caused by hyperinflation and insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria. He urged the federal government to focus on addressing extreme poverty and hunger instead.
Governor Yusuf highlighted his administration’s progress in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and international scholarships, reiterating his commitment to Kano’s development. He also referenced the Supreme Court’s January 2024 ruling that confirmed his leadership, describing it as a validation of the people’s will.
Additionally, the statement celebrated the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II in 2024, describing it as a victory for justice and the wishes of Kano residents.
Deputy Governor Gwarzo called on those interfering in Kano Emirate affairs to respect the law, emphasizing that the authority to appoint an Emir rests solely with the Governor.
Concluding his address, Gwarzo urged residents to embrace unity and resilience in the face of challenges. “Let 2025 be a year of collective progress and shared prosperity. Together, we will build a stronger Kano State,” he said.
