MNJTF Lauds Local Communities in Lake Chad Region for Courage, Vigilance in Combating Terrorism

In a display of remarkable courage and vigilance, local communities residing in the Lake Chad region have been lauded for their pivotal role in the fight against terrorism.
The Force Commander of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali, has expressed his appreciation for the support and proactive engagement of these communities in ongoing operations to combat terrorist threats.
Recent incidents have highlighted the bravery and resilience of the local populations within the MNJTF’s Area of Operation. In a harrowing encounter on April 7, 2024, in Sector 1, Mora, Cameroon, Boko Haram terrorists targeted fishermen in Gourkuma, resulting in the tragic loss of one fisherman’s life.
However, another fisherman valiantly fought back using a paddle, managing to neutralize one terrorist and seize a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with its ammunition.

Similarly, on April 19, 2024, the vigilance of the Baga community in Sector 3, Nigeria, led to the discovery of 323 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition concealed in a septic tank at a construction site. This crucial information was promptly reported to the troops of the 403 Amphibious Brigade, aiding in the interception of potential terrorist activities.
Furthermore, on May 4, 2024, fishermen in Kwatan Aikawa made a significant discovery while fishing in Lake Chad, uncovering a cache of arms including 2 AK-47 rifles, 2 magazines, 76 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and a hand grenade. Their swift action in reporting this finding to the military authorities has been instrumental in thwarting potential terrorist plots.
In a statement, the Chief of Military Public Information Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullahi said the collaborative efforts of the MNJTF forces and the local communities have proven to be instrumental in isolating terrorist elements and providing critical intelligence for successful operations. Major General Ibrahim Sallau Ali emphasized the indispensable role played by these communities in enhancing security and stability in the region.
As the fight against terrorism continues in the Lake Chad Basin, fostering strong partnerships between the military forces and local populations remains imperative. The dedication and bravery exhibited by these communities underscore their commitment to peace and security, serving as a beacon of hope in the ongoing battle against extremist threats in the region.
