The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has refuted reports that a helicopter crashed in Kaduna earlier today, July 1, 2024.
Contrary to reports on social media and some traditional media outlets, the NAF has clarified that no helicopter crash occurred.
Instead, a NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission near Rumji Village, about 15 kilometers from the base. Fortunately, since it was an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on the ground.
The NAF has commenced a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the mishap. The force has assured Nigerians that this minor setback will not impact ongoing operations.
The NAF in a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet also took the opportunity to caution the media against rushing to report breaking news without verifying facts.
Some outlets had incorrectly reported that a helicopter had crashed without seeking clarification from the NAF.
The NAF urged members of the media to always seek clarification from authorized military outlets before reporting to ensure balanced and accurate reporting.
