The Education Endowment Fund of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with the Ubola Rural Community Foundation (URC), has distributed 600 sanitary pads and other dignity kits to female students.
According to the Commission, the vulnerable students are from Fune and Damaturu local councils of Yobe state.
Distributing the dignity kits yesterday (Friday), in Damaturu, URC Executive Chairman Musa Audu said that the exercise was to restore the dignity of the girls, who could not afford to buy the sanitary pads and other kits for their personal hygiene.
“Today’s gestures of distribution are to restore the dignity of female students, particularly the ones from Boko Haram insurgency-affected communities in the state,” he said.
Additionally, he said that the distributed dignity kits could help women and girls maintain their dignity during the humanitarian crises that had claimed manly lives and property.”
While narrating the devasting effects of insurgency, Audu noted that the dignity kits would help women and girls to maintain their dignity during the humanitarian crisis.
Besides dignity sustenance, he added that dignity kits are essential to maintaining self-esteem and confidence.
“Their confidence is, however, important in coping with stressful and potentially overwhelming humanitarian crisis situations,” he said.
He lamented the lack of return of female students due to the low income of their parents and guardians, as the means of income have been destroyed in the over a decade insurgency.
“Much attention has to be taken by the state government in addressing the humanitarian crises in the insurgency-affected communities,” he said.
The State Coordinator of NEDC, Prof. Ali Abbas, also said that the dignity kits would impact the lives of women and girls, and he encouraged them to study seriously in schools and colleges.
