Security Alert: NIS Warns Against Hiring Nigerien Ex-Convicts After Major Jailbreak
By Tada Juthan
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has warned against engaging ex-convicts over the recent jail breaks at the Kouloukole prison in the Niger Republic.
According to the Immigration Service, the recent jailbreak led to the escape of hundreds of terrorists, criminals, and drug traffickers.
NIS’s Acting Comptroller General, M. C. Dike, in a statement yesterday (Wednesday), in Maiduguri, disclosed: “The recent jail break at Kouloukole led to the escape of hundreds of terrorists, criminals, and traffickers,” warning against the engagement of the ex-convicts in Nigeria and border areas with Niger.
Continuing, Dike added, “All Comptrollers of Commands and officers in charge of NIS formation along the Nigeria-Niger borders are instructed to be red-alert.”
He noted that this is with the intent of ensuring that the officers track all suspicious movements along the borders, including airports and border checkpoints.
According to him, the tracking of the fleeing ex-convicts is to be reported to the NIS headquarters in Abuja.
The NIS boss said that it is suspected that the jailbreakers are criminal elements that could sneak into Nigeria by joining other terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits.
Dike, therefore, urged the officers at the borders with Niger to increase their surveillance with other security agencies.
