SPDC Joint Venture Donates $1 Million for Borno Flood Relief Efforts
The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited Joint Venture (SPDC JV) has pledged $1 million to support flood victims in Borno State, where over 500,000 residents have been impacted by severe flooding.
This donation, announced in a statement by SPDC’s Media Relations Manager, Mrs. Gladys Afam-Anadu, aims to provide essential aid, including food, non-food items, and medical supplies, to displaced residents facing critical needs. SPDC Managing Director and Shell Companies in Nigeria Country Chair, Mr. Osagie Okunbor, emphasized that the relief efforts will be managed by a local NGO with experience in working with displaced communities, in collaboration with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency.
“We consider this support a necessity, showing our commitment to the well-being of our communities and providing urgent assistance to those affected by the flooding in Borno State,” Okunbor stated.
The intervention comes in response to a September alert by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) regarding the region’s vulnerability to floods. Bala Wunti, Chief Upstream Operating Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS), highlighted the importance of immediate relief in light of the region’s ongoing recovery from conflict.
“The flooding has severely disrupted lives, especially impacting women and children. We are grateful the SPDC JV can provide needed assistance during this challenging time,” Wunti said, adding that NNPC remains committed to supporting humanitarian efforts and sustainable recovery initiatives in partnership with SPDC JV.
