The President was welcomed by Ambassador Breno Costa from Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations. Other officials included Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, and Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed, Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.
During the two-day summit, scheduled for November 18–19, President Tinubu is expected to participate in discussions centered on the theme, “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet.” The summit will address global challenges such as economic, social, and environmental sustainability, the reform of global governance, rising global temperatures, and the principles of the digital economy.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has held the G20 presidency since December 2023, will host the summit, prioritizing topics like the Israel–Hamas conflict, tensions between the United States and China, and global food security. Da Silva’s agenda for the summit includes combating hunger, poverty, and inequality as part of broader efforts to eliminate extreme poverty by 2030.
The summit will bring together leaders from 19 member countries, including the African Union and European Union, which were invited as special representatives. President Tinubu is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with other leaders to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic reforms and strengthen international partnerships.
NAN reports that the G20 Leaders’ Summit serves as the culmination of a year-long process involving ministerial meetings, working groups, and engagement sessions. Final agreements negotiated throughout the year will be presented for adoption by the heads of state and government.
The 2024 G20 Summit marks a crucial moment in global cooperation, focusing on solutions to pressing challenges and fostering sustainable development worldwide.
