Alhaji Abubakar Yakubu Gana is recognised as one of Borno State’s most experienced and reliable airline operations managers, with over two and a half decades of service in Hajj and domestic airlift coordination.
He served as station manager for Transaharan Air Ltd and Fresh Air Ltd in Maiduguri and later managed extensive Hajj operations for Max Air across multiple stations, including Maiduguri, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
Beyond outbound flights, he also handled incoming operations to Nigeria from King Abdulaziz Airport, Jeddah, for Transaharan Air Ltd., Max Air, Air Niamey, and other airlines. This return phase of Hajj involved coordinating arrivals, baggage, passenger processing, and liaison with Nigerian authorities for over 25 years.

During peak Hajj seasons, Alhaji Gana was responsible for ground handling, passenger processing, manifests, and liaison between NAHCON, FAAN, NAMA, the airlines, and Saudi authorities. His work ensured that thousands of pilgrims from Borno, Yobe, and neighbouring states departed and returned safely and on schedule.
Colleagues and stakeholders in the Borno aviation and pilgrimage community consistently describe him as efficient in managing complex logistics under tight Hajj timelines. Reliable, trusted by airlines and state boards to deliver results; Innovative, introducing practical systems like the bullhorn method to improve passenger flow Experienced – with over 25 years of hands-on knowledge in Hajj protocols and airport operations
His contribution helped strengthen Borno’s reputation for organised Hajj airlift operations and supported the smooth movement of pilgrims from the Northeast to and from the Holy Land.

Northern Governors Pay Tribute to APC Scribe’s Mother
By Jamila Muhammed
The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Alhaja Sidikat Basiru, the mother of the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Surajuddeen Basiru.
Alhaja Sidikat died at the age of 92.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of the governors of the 19 Northern states, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the late matriarch as a woman of exceptional virtue whose life was marked by unwavering faith, discipline, selfless sacrifice and dedication to her family and the service of Allah.
He noted that the passing of a mother remains one of life’s greatest emotional losses, regardless of a person’s age or status, saying such a loss leaves an irreplaceable void.
“The death of a mother is one of the most painful experiences in life. No matter one’s age or position, the vacuum created by her departure is difficult to fill,” the governor said.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya urged Senator Basiru, his siblings and the entire Basiru family to find solace in the exemplary life their mother lived and the lasting legacy she bequeathed to her children and society.
He said the late Alhaja’s values of discipline, humility, integrity and sound moral upbringing were reflected in the lives and public service of her children, particularly Senator Basiru, whose commitment to national service has earned widespread respect.
“The greatest tribute children can pay to their departed parents is to uphold the noble values they instilled in them. Alhaja lived a fulfilled and honourable life, raising children who continue to make meaningful contributions to society and our nation,” Governor Inuwa Yahaya stated.
On behalf of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, the governor extended heartfelt condolences to Senator Ajibola Basiru, the immediate and extended Basiru family, the government and people of Osun State, as well as the leadership and members of the APC over the loss.
He prayed that Almighty Allah (SWT) would forgive the shortcomings of the deceased, accept her noble deeds and grant her eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
