In the early hours of Sunday, suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a deadly attack on the Jakana police station in Borno State, resulting in the tragic deaths of a police officer and his female friend.
The insurgents, who emerged from the notorious Sambisa Forest, also set ablaze two police patrol vehicles and a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) vehicle during the raid.
According to Abbas Ali Abari, Chairman of Konduga Local Council, the assailants targeted the police station at approximately 1:00 a.m., seizing several arms and ammunition from the station’s armoury.
Abari confirmed in a telephone interview that the terrorists killed a police driver and his female companion before engaging in a fierce battle with the military and police forces.
The confrontation, which lasted for about three hours, ended with the insurgents being overpowered by the superior firepower of the troops.
Despite the intense firefight, the terrorists managed to escape, retreating into the dense forest via the Jakana-Damboa demarcated cattle route.
This latest attack underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram in the region as security forces continue to grapple with the insurgency.
Authorities have vowed to intensify their efforts to secure the area and prevent further attacks, even as the community mourns the loss of the brave officer and his friend.
