Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has presented a N320.81 billion budget for next year to the State House of Assembly.
According to him, the 2025 budget would seek to entrench a policy of completing all ongoing capital projects before embarking on new ones across the state.
Presenting the appropriation bill to the Assembly on Thursday in Damaturu, Buni disclosed: “Our watchword would remain the strict adherence to due process and transparency,” stating that this will enable the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adhere to budgetary provisions.
Additionally, he said that the measures will block leakages with an enabling environment to woo investors and turn the economic fortunes of the state.
The appropriation bill tagged: “Budget of economic consolidation and poverty reduction.” Buni said capital expenditure has been earmarked for N176.8 billion, while recurrent expenditure will gulp N144 billion, or 50 percent of total budgetary allocations.
He noted that next year’s budget has increased by 47.8 percent over this year’s N217 billion appropriations to the legislators.
On the sectorial budgetary allocations, he stated that the economic sector took the lion’s share of N157 billion, comprising 14 MDAs and other boards and agencies.
Besides the MDA allocations, the state government will commence the construction of the Nguru-Kannama Trans-Sahara Road to serve border communities with Niger.
He said: “More solar-powered boreholes would be drilled and water reticulation improved with new pipelines in Damaturu, the state capital, and four other towns.
“We would also commence work on the Damaturu Green Economic City and intensify efforts by providing and rehabilitating facilities at the Nasari, Gurjaje and Bade-Gana Livestock Development Centres.
According to him, the social and administration sectors were also earmarked N108.5 billion and N50.5 billion, respectively, for providing service delivery to the people.
While receiving the budget, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, assured the governor that it will be passed within a short period to implement the 2025 presented budget.
Mashio, therefore, urged Buni to harness and develop the local economy by boosting internally generated revenues (IGR).
