Yobe Secures $3.4 Million Swiss Funding to Combat Humanitarian Crisis
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has secured a $3.4 million (N5.44 billion) grant from the Swiss government to address the humanitarian crisis caused by recent floods and prolonged conflicts in the state. The funding, which spans the 2025-2026 period, aims to support internally displaced persons (IDPs), restore livelihoods, and promote sustainable economic development.
The governor announced this significant milestone yesterday during a courtesy visit by a Swiss delegation led by Nicolas Martin-Achard, First Secretary for Humanitarian Aid and Development Cooperation, at the Government House, Damaturu.
“We deeply appreciate the Swiss government for this humanitarian support, which will provide durable solutions for displaced persons and revitalize affected communities,” Buni stated. He emphasized the critical need for partnerships rooted in trust and commitment to effectively tackle the crisis and rebuild the state.
The decade-long conflict, coupled with devastating floods, has displaced thousands of residents across Yobe’s local councils. Governor Buni pledged to collaborate closely with Switzerland and other development partners to ensure peace, stability, and long-term growth.
Martin-Achard lauded the governor’s efforts to mitigate the displacement crisis, expressing confidence in the partnership’s potential to transform the lives of Yobe’s most vulnerable populations.
The meeting also featured key stakeholders, including the Country Director of Save the Children International, the Yobe State Coordinator of the SOLID Project, and a representative from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the state’s recovery and development initiatives.
