Yoruba Elders Urge Urgent Restructuring Amidst Socioeconomic Challenges
In a press statement released on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, the Council of Yoruba Elders (CYE) passionately called for the immediate restructuring of Nigeria, citing the deteriorating socioeconomic conditions affecting Yorubaland.
Expressing deep concern, the CYE highlighted the alarming increase in suicides attributed to hunger and hopelessness, underscoring the unprecedented suffering of the masses. Ongoing security threats, such as Fulani herdsmen attacks and abductions, particularly in Ondo and Oyo states, were emphasized as persistent issues.

Despite a brief reduction in such incidents following the change of government in May 2023, the council decried the resurgence of these challenges. Additionally, the CYE drew attention to the soaring inflation, widespread unemployment, electricity and fuel supply issues, and the unaffordability of healthcare services.
While congratulating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory, the CYE stressed his role as the new voice for the Yoruba people. They urged President Tinubu to address the pressing regional issues, emphasizing the historical success of regionalism during the era of Obafemi Awolowo.
The council specifically called on President Tinubu to revisit the 2014 National Conference report, which had been neglected by the previous administration. Urging unity among Yoruba delegates who participated in the conference, the CYE proposed the formation of a mass committee for the restructuring of Nigeria.
Key figures such as Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and Femi Falana SAN were identified to lead these restructuring efforts on behalf of the Yoruba people. The CYE invited all other nationalities to join in advocating for a more prospective arrangement for the country.
In taking this bold step, the CYE’s press release serves as a pivotal moment in the collective effort to address and reshape Nigeria’s future amidst ongoing challenges.
