Zulum Vows to Complete Legacy Infrastructure Before Leaving Office
By Tada Jutha, Maiduguri
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has reiterated his administration’s determination to complete major infrastructure projects across Borno State before the end of his tenure in May 2027, assuring residents that ongoing developments will not be abandoned.
The governor gave the assurance on Monday after inspecting several strategic projects within Maiduguri, the state capital, which he described as critical to economic growth and urban development.
Among the projects visited were the 4,000-seat International Conference Centre, the Post Office Flyover, and the dualisation of the 2.5-kilometre Tandari–Neitel Shoe–Tennary Road corridor through the Maiduguri Cattle Market area.
Speaking with journalists after the inspection tour, Mr Zulum expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work at the construction sites, particularly the conference centre and the flyover project.
“We have inspected all the project sites, and I am pleased with the level of progress recorded so far, especially at the International Conference Centre and the Post Office Flyover,” the governor said.
He stressed that his administration remains focused on delivering projects that directly improve the lives of residents, adding that no effort would be spared to ensure their completion before the expiration of his mandate.
“Insha Allah, we will do everything possible to ensure that all projects with direct benefits to our people are completed before the end of this administration,” he stated.
Governor Zulum disclosed that the International Conference Centre is expected to be completed by September, while contractors handling the Post Office flyover have been directed to finish work within the next 30 to 40 days.
According to him, meeting the deadlines is crucial to ensuring that the public begins to enjoy the benefits of the projects without unnecessary delays.
“We have fixed September as the target date for the completion of the International Conference Centre, while the flyover project should be concluded before the end of June. I am here to assess progress and ensure the contractors meet the agreed timelines,” he said.
The governor noted that his administration has already delivered hundreds of development projects across the state and intends to maintain the momentum in the remaining months of its tenure.
“The people of Borno have witnessed numerous projects executed across the state. We are committed to completing all ongoing works and, where possible, initiating additional projects that will further improve livelihoods,” he added.
Mr Zulum also urged contractors to take advantage of the current favourable weather conditions to speed up construction activities, assuring them of continued government support and funding.
He warned, however, that any contractor unable to complete assigned work within the agreed timeframe risks having the project reassigned.
“Any component of the project that is not completed within the stipulated period will be taken over by the Ministry of Works to ensure timely delivery,” he said.
The governor further assured residents affected by the Post Office Flyover project that all legitimate compensation claims would be honoured, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fairness and due process.
The ongoing projects form part of the state government’s broader urban renewal and infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving transportation, boosting economic activities, and enhancing public services across Borno State.
